3 Tab shingles
(25-year manufacturer’s warranty)

The 3 tab shingles offer a classic look and are the industry standard. These traditional shingles are 36” long and are divided into three 12″ tabs with a split between each tab. Asphalt shingles are composed of a base layer of glass fiber mat, asphalt and mineral fillers, and colored ceramic granules are used as the surface material. The fiber glass mat gives the shingle strength and provides support for the weather resistant components.

A coating of asphalt and mineral fillers are applied to the fiberglass mat. The asphalt makes the shingle waterproof and the mineral fillers are used to allow the asphalt to adhere to the fiberglass.
The ceramic granules are then applied over the asphalt layer providing the shingle with protection from impact and UV exposure. The granules are also used in creating the color of the shingle.

Most fiberglass shingles come with a Class A fire resistance rating. Many of the shingle manufacturers offer algae resistant shingles which use a zinc or copper coating to reduce algae growth. The traditional look of the 3 tab shingles are very popular, however the more dimensional architectural and designer shingles have been increasing in popularity.

Architectural shingles
(available with 30-year, 40-year, & limited lifetime manufacturer’s warranties)

The architectural shingle, also known as laminate consists of the same material as the three tab shingle, but has two layers, which are bonded with an asphalt sealant. Architectural shingles are heavier and more durable than the traditional 3 tab shingles. Because of the heavier construction they provide a much better wind resistance and carry longer manufacturer’s warranties. The variance of color and definition of the shingle creates an interesting and three dimensional appearance, similar to wood shakes. These popular shingles can enhance the look of any home or commercial building.

Designer Shingles
(available with 30-year to Limited Lifetime manufacturer’s warranty)

Most manufacturers produce a line of designer shingles, as a low cost alternative to the much more expensive roofing materials. Designer shingles are multi layer, high end, dimensional shingles that come in a unique variety of styles. These high quality shingles offer dramatic appearances and are designed to imitate the more expensive roof systems such as slate, cedar shake, and tile. The designer shingles are heavier weight shingles with deeper shadow lines, and richer texture.

Wood shake shingles

Wood shakes and wood shingles are commonly used roofing materials that provide long lasting weather protection. They are typically made from western cedar logs and are reshaped by the manufacturers. Wood shingles are sawn and have a flat and smooth surface offering a more tailored look whereas the wood shakes are split to form a thicker and irregular shape giving a more rugged form. The variance of color, thickness, and cut of the wood shakes and shingles creates a natural rustic appearance. These wood roofing products are energy efficient, as they have a high insulation value and provide ventilation to the home which can lower energy costs for heating and cooling.

The wood shingles and shakes come in three lengths; 16″, 18″, and 24″ and are available in many shapes. Several of the manufacturers’ offer a variety of treatments including wood preservative treatments, pre stained shakes/shingles, and fire retardant pressure treatments giving a measurable degree of fire protection, as these wood products are susceptible to fire damage.
